The whole .zip, the unzipped folder, or just followers_1.json (+ followers_2.json…) and following.json.

Simple steps, no technical knowledge needed.

How to get your Instagram export

Instagram lets you download a copy of your information. Follow Check needs only a small part of it: the list of your followers and the accounts you follow. Requesting it takes a few minutes.

1 Ask Instagram for your export

  1. Open Instagram, in the app or at instagram.com on a computer.
  2. Open Settings. In the app: go to your profile and tap the menu ☰ at the top. On a computer: click More (bottom left), then Settings.
  3. Tap Meta Account. On some accounts it's still called Accounts Center. It's the same place.
  4. Tap Your information and permissions.
  5. Tap Export your information (older versions say Download your information), then Create export.
  6. Choose the Instagram profile you want to check.
  7. Choose Export to device.
  8. Tap Customize information. Untick everything, then tick only Followers and following (you'll find it under Connections).
  9. Set Date range to All time.
  10. Set Format to JSON. Not HTML
  11. Tap Start export. Instagram may ask for your password. That's Instagram checking it's you.

2 Wait for Instagram

  1. Instagram prepares your file. How long this takes varies. Instagram will notify you (or email you) when it's ready.

3 Download the ZIP

  1. Go back to Export your information and find it under Available downloads. Tap Download. Instagram keeps it there for 4 days.

4 Open it in Follow Check

  1. Come back here and drag the ZIP onto the upload area, or click the upload area and select it.
  2. Follow Check reads it right here, in your browser.

Your Instagram export stays on your device. Follow Check processes it locally in your browser and does not upload your export to a server.

Instagram sometimes renames its menus. If something looks slightly different, pick the closest match. Steps checked against Instagram's Help Center in September 2026.
